=======================================================================

The First Annual HPF User Group Meeting will be held February 24
to 26, 1997, at the Eldorado Hotel in Sante Fe, New Mexico. At this
time, it is anticipated that the meeting will end around noon on
Wednesday. The meeting will provide an opportunity for users of HPF
to meet each other, share ideas and experience, and get up-to-date
information about implementations and future directions.

The day before the conference (February 23) will be devoted to
tutorials:

 o Introduction to HPF (morning)

Covering the basics of programming in HPF.

 o HPF 2.0 (afternoon)

Presentation of the newly-finalized HPF version 2.0.

The conference itself will include:

o Invited Talks by HPF users

o Invited Talks by HPF developers

 o Panel Discussions

Ken Kennedy will moderate a panel discussion to promote
user feedback on HPF. The particular focuses of this panel
will be to advise compiler developers on where to focus their
efforts: What features do programmers use? What features
need better implementations? Attendee participation is highly
        encouraged.

Other panels may be added based on attendee interest.
Proposals for panel sessions may be submitted through the
        "contributed talks" mechanism.

o Contributed Talks from the HPF user community

 o Social Activities

An opening reception will be held at the hotel Sunday evening.
A banquet on Tuesday evening will be held at the hotel.

Conference attendees are encouraged to submit abstracts for
presentations at the meeting.

Call For Presentations:
-----------------------

We invite everyone with HPF ideas or experiences to submit abstracts
of papers and posters for possible presentation at the meeting.
List of topics includes (but is not limited to):

 o Real-world HPF Applications:
      CFD

To the HPFF core group:

The next HPFF meeting will be held on December 9-11, 1996. The meeting
will be held at Rice University, 6100 Main Street, Houston, TX, 77005.

The registration fee for this meeting will be $100, and will be collected
on site. Please make your checks and POs payable to Rice University (no
credit cards or cash, please). In order to adequately prepare for the
meeting, I will need to know if you plan to attend, so please RSVP to
tlc@rice.edu. If you are a vegetarian or have any other special needs, I
will need to know this as well.

We have a block of rooms at the Houston Plaza Hilton, 6633 Travis, Houston,
TX, 77030. To make your hotel reservations, call 713-313-4000 no later
than November, 18,1996 (the fax number is 713-313-4650). After that date,
the rooms will be released to the general public. Be sure to refer to the
HPFF meeting.

Our sleeping room rate is $75 per night for single occupancy and $85 per
night for double occupancy. The hotel sleeping rooms are equipped with
dataport lines, so you will be able to use your portable computers from
your sleeping rooms.

The Hilton is two blocks from Rice University, and they offer complimentary
shuttle service to and from Rice. There is a shuttle service, Airport
Express, that travels between the airports and area hotels. The cost is
$11.50 one-way between the hotel and Hobby Airport, and $16.75 one-way
between the hotel and Intercontinental Airport. Resevations are not
necessary (they are located in the baggage claim area at the airports), but
they can be reached at 713-523-8888. You should allow a little extra
travel time if you choose to use this service--the reservationist can give
you an estimate on travel time.

If you have handouts that you would like to have distributed at the HPFF
meeting, please send them to me by noon Central Time on Thursday, December
5, 1996. Electronic copies should be sent to tlc@rice.edu AND
crpc.tr@cs.rice.edu.

For the people who will be supported by the CRPC: when you make your hotel
reservations, please present them with a credit card number in order to
cover your incidentals. The CRPC will be directly billed for your sleeping
room charges.

The format of the meeting follows:

Monday, 12/9

9am - 10pm

One U-shaped room for 25 people.
Two breakout rooms conference style for 10-15 people each.

Continental breakfast, breaks, and lunch will be provided. Dinner is at
your own expense.

Tuesday, 12/10

9am - 10pm

One U-shaped room for 25 people.

Thanks, Mary, for getting the document release together. My (still
perplexed) apologies for the truncated files on titan.cs.rice.edu.

For the rest of you, the nearly-ready-for-prime-time release is now
available from

ftp://titan.cs.rice.edu/public/HPFF/hpf2.0-draft/Releases/14-oct-96.tar.gz

or as individual files from

ftp://titan.cs.rice.edu/public/HPFF/hpf2.0-draft/

These are unpacked directly from the tar file Mary sent around to hpff-doc
on Friday. They pass LaTeX on the Rice machine, which is better than
nothing. I make no guarentees about completeness of files. Editors are
urged to compare the versions out there with their notes...

We plan to announce this version to the world on Friday. Comments are
appreciated!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The High Performance Fortran Forum is pleased to announce the availablility
of _The High Performance Fortran Language Specification, version
2.0.delta_. HPF 2.0 contains:

* The HPF 2.0 Language
* HPF 2.0 Approved Extensions

The HPF 2.0 language includes features that are expected of every HPF
implementation within a year of release of the language specification.
These include:

- Basic data distribution features (ALIGN and DISTRIBUTE, with some
simplifications from HPF 1.1 in the procedure calls),
- Data parallel features (FORALL and INDEPENDENT, including a new REDUCTION
clause for INDEPENDENT),
- Intrinsic and library routines (HPF 1.1, plus two new forms of sorting), and
- The EXTRINSIC mechanism (as in HPF 1.0).

The Approved Extensions include advanced features that meet specific needs,
but are not likely to be supported in all initial compiler implementations.
These include:

- New data distribution patterns (including INDIRECT mappings and SHADOW
regions) and DYNAMIC data distributions (REALIGN and REDISTRIBUTE),
- New parallel control mechanisms (including the ON clause and TASK_REGION
directive),
- Asynchronous I/O operations, and
- Several predefined EXTRINSIC types (some, like HPF_LOCAL, supported by
the HPF Forum; other, like HPF_CRAFT, supported by other groups).

The specification is available in several forms:

Anonymous FTP from ftp://titan.cs.rice.edu/public/HPFF/hpf2/
    This directory contains:
hpf-report.ps	Postscript version of the document
hpf-report.dvi	DVI version of the document
*.tex LaTeX source for the document
			(hpf-report.tex is the root file)
Releases/*.tar.gz	TAR files of preliminary drafts
			(name indicates date created)

	Rice University
	6100 Main Street
	Houston, TX 77005
or e-mail to tlc@cs.rice.edu to request a copy.
There is a $50.00 charge to cover copying and shipping costs.

We hope to have the draft available through the WWW shortly. Due to the
length and complexity of the document, turning it into HTML is "highly
nontrivial" (i.e. latex2html chokes on the macros). We will make an
announcement to this mailing list when it arrives.

***** IMPORTANT *****
This is a public comment version of the document. We value any and all
reactions that you care to make. These will be taken into consideration in
preparing the final draft in December. Please send your comments by e-mail
