I said I would convert the HPF 1.1 Language Specification
into Microsoft Word, and I have done so, as near as my bleary
eyes can tell.

I am looking for volunteers for two tasks.

The first is to proofread a Postscript version of the spec,
which I will happily send you, to look for conversion errors
and to suggest formatting improvements.

In doing the conversion, I developed a set of Word macros and
toolbars (HSDK, the HPF Specification Development Kit :-)) to
facilitate the process, and to assist in writing new material.
For example, there are toolbar buttons for each of the paragraph
and character styles I used in the conversion. Also, there are
macros to find all instances of words in wordlists and apply
a given character style. This means you can type FORALL and,
when you later run the macro, it will be put into the "embedded
code" character style, which makes it New Courier font. And, I
spell-checked the spec and produced an HPF-specific dictionary.

The second task is to try out the current version of the HSDK
to see whether it can be delivered and installed reasonably,
whether it is useful, and to suggest improvements. I am using
Word 6.0a on Windows for Workgroups and have not tried it on a
Mac yet (volunteers?).

The line for volunteers forms over there....

I wanted to follow up on the events of the January meeting so that we are
all focused on the tasks we need to accomplish for the rest of the spring.

1. Word Processing System

Although I have not yet been able to do a deal with Adobe, I would propose
that we go ahead and settle on FrameMaker 5 as the word processing system
for the document. FrameMaker gives us an implementation on all major
platforms and compatibility with Fortran 95.

We will take care of providing a copy to the Executive Director. As I
understand it, the remainder of the document editors may be able to acquire
copies on their own. I will, however, continue to pursue the Adobe
connection with Chuck Geshke.

Chuck Koelbel has agreed to be in charge of getting the document moved from
Loveman's Word version to Frame using (I hope) the formats developed for
Fortran 95.

2. The New Document Division

At the January meeting we tentatively adopted a document organization that
has three versions of the language: a kernel based on Meltzer's kernel
proposal, the 2.0 language based on 1.1 plus a few extensions and
contractions, and a set of "approved extensions." In doing this, we are
attempting to encourage the compiler developers to focus on high-quality
implementations of the base language before moving to new and more
difficult features.

However, it is very important that we not discard the efforts of those who
have been working on extensions that were part of the charge adopted at the
kickoff for HPF 2, especially support for irregular computations and task
parallelism. Thus, the "approved extensions" must be taken very seriously
by the group and in the report, because they specify how the features
should be provided in future commercial and research compiler systems. We
cannot treat these as a "journal of development" to which anything can be
added that is not approved for the language itself.
We must continue the efforts we have been carrying on to pass an accessible
standard for the longer-term future as well as one for the present and
immediate future.

We will have a very full schedule at our next meeting, so I encourage
everyone to come early enough to work on proposals before the plenary
meeting itself begins.

Ken

To the HPFF core group:

The next HPFF meeting will be held on March 13-15, 1996. The meeting will
be held at the Arlington Hilton, 2401 East Lamar Boulevard, Arlington, TX,
76006.

The registration fee for this meeting will be $100, and will be collected
on site. Please make your checks and POs payable to Rice University (no
credit cards or cash, please). In order to adequately prepare for the
meeting, I will need to know if you plan to attend, so please RSVP to
tlc@rice.edu. If you are a vegetarian or have any other special needs, I
will need to know this as well.

To make your hotel reservations, call 817-640-3322 or 1-800-527-9332

The Arlington Hilton offers shuttle service to and from DFW Airport. In
order to take advantage of this service, guests will need to call the
Hilton from their courtesy phone in the baggage claim area. The cost of
the service is $5 each way, and payment is taken upon boarding. This
service is available from 7am to 11pm. The Hilton is 9 miles from the DFW
